The Max Mara Series

COLLABORATION WITH HARPER’S BAZAAR GERMANY AND MAX MARA
During the summer of 2023 Alice Herbst was invited by editor in chief at Harper's Bazaar Germany - Kerstin Schneider, and Max Mara to create works interpreting the 2024 Resort collection, "Septem Flores." Additionally, Herbst participated in an interview discussing her creative process and sources of inspiration for the October issue.

FROM IAN GRIFFITHS’S REFERENCES TO SWEDISH MIDSUMMER AND TRADITIONS TO ALICE HERBST’S INTERPRETATION OF THE COLLECTION. The "Septem Flores" collection, designed by Ian Griffiths and unveiled at Stockholm City Hall,  drew inspiration from Swedish midsummer with a rather gothic twist, author Selma Lagerlöf, and folklore. Alice’s work for this collaboration incorporated her experiences with Swedish history and her grandparents' tradition of creating Scandinavian folk art such as sculptures, paintings, and furniture.

She also found inspiration in the works of Swedish artist Carl Larsson. (Born in 1853 and recognized for his watercolor depictions of his everyday life home with his family in Sundborn.) Taking a break from her usual medium of choice, oil paint, Alice chose to work with watercolors, colored pencil, gouache, and oil pastels to create the feeling that the collection evoked in her. The resulting works were named after elements of nature, reflecting the "Septem Flores" theme with titles such as "Jasmine," "Flora," "Dahlia," and "Iris." Notably, three of these works has become part of the Maramotti collection in Reggio Emilia, Italy. To complete the collection of the seven wildflowers Alice Herbst made an addition of three works in the same medium titled “Daisy”, “Viola” and “Linnea”.
